‘Journalisten laten zich tegenwoordig voorstaan op hun agressie’, schreef Financial Times-journalist John Lloyd in What the Media are doing to our Politics (2004), en hij citeerde het beroemd geworden advies dat Harry Evans als redacteur van de Sunday Times aan zijn journalisten gaf: ‘Wanneer je een politicus interviewt, moet je jezelf altijd de vraag stellen: waarom zit die klootzak tegen me te liegen?’ Bijna tien jaar later lijken steeds meer politici zich tijdens interviews een soortgelijke vraag te stellen: wie denkt die brutale klootzak van een journalist wel dat hij is? Op de een of andere manier voelt dat als een heel goede ontwikkeling.

As I have written before, when people are upset, it matters less what you tell them than what you enable them to tell you. After they get their feelings off their chest, that’s when they can then have a constructive conversation with you. And not before.

What it's like to die:

If there is one lesson I took away from the experience, it is not to “live life to the fullest” or “have no regrets”. It is to feel lucky. Feeling lucky means you are appreciating the things in your life that sometimes go unnoticed. It means you are achieving more than think you deserve. Feeling lucky requires a certain humility we often lose sight of.

For me, it took losing everything to remember how lucky I am.
